The Importance Of Minority Rights - 826 Words

All human beings are entitled to equality and justice through our legal system and the state must accommodate to the rights of the minority groups. Some minority rights seem to conflict with liberal rights, for an example forcing women to stay home. (Freedman, 30 October 2017). In this essay, I will argue that the state should not endorse rights that infringes with the equality of the rights of a minority, therefore inhibiting the state’s ability to treat all of its citizens with equal concern and respect. Bill 62 and African Americans are two examples of the majority not being tolerant of the minorities rights. Achieving equality for all citizens in a society requires granting special rights to minorities in a liberal state. They are not open to viewing the religion or rights of minority groups. A state ran by a m ajority could very easily use power they don’t have against the minority rights. An example of the government misusing their power is the history of African American being â€Å"used involuntarily as slaves and prevented from integrating into the institutions of the majority culture through racial segregation† (Kymlicka 360). Africa American may have the greatest injustices of all the ethnocultural groups, mainly because of their historical mistreatment by the majority. Denial of the rights of certain minority groups cause conflict between groups and the rights of the minorities. Equality within a society means the delivering of minority rights. Multiculturalism in fact fails because everyone does not share a common set of beliefs and interest as the rest of the citizens. Since a society already has an official language and culture, the state still isn’t entitled to force this on the citizens. It is up to them which culture they choose to practice.
